Janka Ratings

Janka Rating Defined

The Janka Rating measures the hardness of a timber, i.e. its ability to withstand denting and wear & tear. The rating of the timber is calculated by testing the amount of force required to embed a steel ball into the piece of timber to half its diameter.

The higher the Janka Rating of a particular species, the harder the timber.
